Former Time magazine’s “Man of the Year”, Newton “the Newt” Gingrich, really put his foot his mouth with his comment that Palestinians are an “invented” people. Newty adeptly used his poor grasp on history by stating “I believe that the Jewish people have the right to have a state, and that “Remember, there was no Palestine as a state. It was part of the Ottoman Empire. And I think that we’ve had an invented Palestinian people, who are in fact Arabs, who are historically part of the Arab community.”
Dude, Israel/Palestine, whatever you want to call it, is smack dab in the middle of the Arabic community.
Maybe the Palestinians should have foreseen the Holocaust coming along with the forthcoming Western intervention and with the fall of the Ottoman empire packed their shit and went elsewhere. Syria perhaps. It would have saved everyone a lot of problems. But then again if their wasn’t a Palestinian opposition I’m sure that Netanyahu and company would be trying to settle on Syrian land as well.
While it is becoming apparent that a two-state solution is the only feasible solution to this time-tested conflict, Newt has taken us back a few steps with his remarks. I’m sure that the uber-Christian Quran burners down in Florida are on board. What happens if this man becomes our next president? This is the exact attitude that is isolating us in perhaps the most important strategic arena in the world, the Middle East.
It is grossly embarrassing that a US presidential candidate could be this ignorant to make such a statement. It’s bad enough to think it, but to say in an interview? While clearly trying to secure the Jewish vote, Newt has sent a message that will resonate throughout other parts of world, especially the Middle East.
The US should be proud. We now have prominent politicians on the world stage either trying to “pray the gay away” (which won’t work Michele, it’s called biology. It’s real.) or telling the world that people who have inhabited a land for thousands of years are “invented”.
I think that it would be a bit more constructive to be concerned with what the Israeli government is doing to the Palestinians and pressuring them to stop. It is systematically cutting off the West Bank from its fresh water sources via the “Security Wall” while they are systematically cutting off 1.6 million Palestinians in Gaza from everything. Food, concrete, you name it. The siege on Gaza is reminiscent of sieges on a castle during the Middle Ages. Surround the castle and wait until they starve.
C’mon Newt, I don’t think any people, invented or otherwise, deserve that.
